Jim Corbett National Park is the oldest national park of India attracting wildlife freaks from all over the world. It is located at the foothills of the mighty Himalayas in the Nanital district of Uttarakhand. The Park is renowned for its wild cats, tigers. The Park derived its name from a hunter turned conservationist, Jim Corbett who worked a great deal in establishing the Park. The Park is also a Tiger Reserve where the endangered Bengal Tigers roam freely in their natural habitat.

Sprawling over an area of 500 sq km, Jim Corbett National Park was established in 1936 as the Hailey National Park. Later it was renamed as Ramganga and finally Jim Corbett National Park. The Park is the proud home of around 575 avian species, 33 reptile species, 50 mammal species, 7 amphibian species, 7 fish species and 37 dragonfly species. Some of the attractions of the Park are tiger, leopard, elephant, barking deer, sambar, hog, Black buck and chital), Sloth and Himalayan Black bears, Indian Grey Mongoose, otters, yellow-throated martens, ghoral (goat-antelopes), Indian pangolins, and langur. The fauna of the Park consists of around 488 species of plants.


Jim Corbett is a great destination for bird lovers and some of the fascinating birds sighted here are Cinerous Vulture, Crested Serpent Eagle, Kestrel, Black Partridge, Kaleej Pheasant, Red Junglefowl, Common Peafowl, Redwattled Lapwing, Spurwinged Lapwing, Pintailed Green Pigeon, Blue Rock Pigeon,Turtle Dove, Rufous Turtle Dove, Indian Ring Dove, Spotted Dove, Emerald Dove, Alexandrine Parakeet, Roseringed Parakeet, lossomheaded Parakeet, Common Hawk, Himalayan Pied Kingfisher andLesser Pied Kingfisher.

Jim Corbett National Park offers jeep safari and elephant safari, each having its own charm. In fact one can try both. Elephant safari is slow but can take you to the the jungle tracks where jeep can't go. The geographical features of the Park embraces numerous ravines, ridges, streams and small plateaus. The Ramganga river also flows through the Park. Visitors can enjoy angling and fishing in the Park. However, fishing is allowed only at Pancheshwar, Ramgarh and Binsar with special permission from the forest officials.

Dhikala:

Located at the corner of the beautiful Patli Dun valley where the river Ramganga flows in several channels, Dhikala is an amazing site in the Park. It offers sheer scenic beauty.


Garjia Temple:

It is a fascinating rock in the middle of river Kosi. It is dedicated to Goddess Garjia Devi.


Corbett Museum:

It houses the belongings of Sir Jim Corbett. It also provides information about the life history of him.

From November to June.

How To Reach

By Air: The nearest airport is Phoolbagh at Pantnagar located 50 km from the Park.

By Rail: The nearest railway station is Ramnagar(14 km from the Park). Muradabad is the nearest junction from where tourists can get trains to most of the main cities of India.

By Road: The Park is well connected to the places in Uttarakhand and the other important cities of the country.
